Fun Book, Simplified Zones of Regulation

As a special education teacher, I enjoyed this book. First, this books has great illustrations! Secondly, the story is engaging. The premise of an engine, with emotions causing it to change colors, seems like it will be interesting for young readers. The emotions cause the engine to change colors, and the colors remind me of the Zones of Regulation colors, but it uses the colors of a traffic light. The book provides examples of coping strategies to calm down when agitated. If I worked with younger students I would use this in my class

This book is a awesome!

I’m a teacher and a grandmother and this book is so useful and helpful to get kids to be able to verbalize their feelings and learn how to face them. And it’s set in a very fun imaginative way that will get kids asking for it again and again.

Must read for parents with children who struggle with regulation

This book takes a complex topic and simplifies it in a way that a young child can not only understand but actually enjoy learning about it! Have you ever thought that your brain is like an engine?

 

Similar to a traffic light, your engine can be green, yellow, or red. When you feel happy or calm, your engine is green. When your engine is green, your muscles feel relaxed, and your breathing is steady. Other times, when you're nervous or angry, your engine is yellow or red. When your engine is yellow, you might pick your fingernails or wiggle in your seat. When your engine is red, you might clench your fists and feel shaky.
